Best of Both Worlds: Lingotek Launches “Crowdsourcing” Translation Platform Enabling Human and Machine Translation

At Localization World today, Lingotek introduced software-as-a-service (SaaS) collaborative translation technology that enables organizations to cost-effectively centralize and streamline the translation of a significantly higher volume of content across hundreds of languages. This Web-based “crowdsourcing” platform, shown in booth 104, combines into one application the workflow and computer-aided translation capabilities found in recently introduced translation tools. As a result, a community of humans can translate text of any kind, rank the translation for accuracy and provide final edits, all via a browser from anywhere in the world. Lingotek’s machine translation captures translated text and then suggests the translated text when the words or phrases appear again, reducing the overall time and effort required for translation.

Organizations already benefiting from Lingotek’s collaborative translation platform include the U.S. Library of Congress’ World Digital Library project and the $1.25 billion direct selling company Nu Skin (also announced today). The company also has a strategic investment, work development, and licensing program with In-Q-Tel, the independent strategic investment firm that identifies innovative technology solutions to support the missions of the Central Intelligence Agency and the broader U.S. Intelligence Community.

“Until now, the per-word cost for translating and localizing product and marketing documents – including websites - has been prohibitive for many businesses wanting to build an international presence, and even many Fortune 500 companies limit translation to only the most critical documents,” said Robert Vandenberg, CEO, Lingotek. “This leaves highly beneficial documents unreadable by customers. With Lingotek, these companies can ‘crowdsource’ the translation using either their paid or unpaid communities - and centralize the management of the projects, significantly lowering costs and enabling many more documents to be translated – and translated accurately.”

True Collaboration Facilitates Accurate Translation

With Lingotek’s Web-based interface and project management platform, organizations can upload new projects, assign translators (paid or unpaid), check the status of current projects in real time and download completed documents, all from any computer with Web access. As a result, they can ensure translation projects are done in time to release products or services around the world simultaneously, with all content accurately translated with sensitivity to every colloquial nuance of the native language and country.

The SaaS platform, which requires no client install, enables true collaboration, allowing translators to work together on the same documents at the same time. No need to email files back and forth and wait for a reply, as a group a translators or reviewers can get the job done together. The platform also

  • Prevents translators from duplicating work by locking sentences in progress.
  • Helps ensure consistency by showing relevant similarities to the current sentence in translation with past translations by others in your team.
  • Allows the group to police itself to provide the highest accuracy by allowing voting and corrections by others in the team in the review interface.
  • Enables a professional reviewer to be assigned to make the content “publication ready.”
