Trusted Cloud - Global Connect Program

Fast-tracking Cloud Security innovation from Canada to the world

To help Canadian firms develop new ventures in the Cloud computing market and contribute to making the nation a leader in this huge IT field, our Canada Cloud business plan will offer a Global Connect Program for fast-tracking the international expansion of the innovation it generates.

Agile Venturing
This is a technique we're pioneering called Agile Venturing, which simply means a combination of using real-world documented customer requirements as the specifications for new solutions, and then using global best practices to define these solutions.

We'll be working with a variety of best practices this way, in particular the Cloud Security Alliance, as this offers a very comprehensive solutions framework for the real project opportunities that are out there, and that can be addressed consistently on a global basis. Ie. Using their techniques to develop local Canadian solutions makes these products scalable to all other regions also adopting the CSA, which is global.

For example I have reviewed the first two RFPs, RFP#2010-KR-015 for Microsoft e-Health ‘Community Clouds’ and RF210874 is for Disaster Recovery services.

The principle requirements for these projects can be addressed through the CSA program, which offers a broad set of capabilities that includes BCP (Business Continuity Planning), as well as rigorous technical security practices that are needed.

In particular this includes their 'Trusted Cloud' initiative, which caters for the security needed for the core Sharepoint CRM virtualization that the community cloud will be used for. Since this type of approach will be needed many times throughout the world it is the backbone of our relevant R&D program, and central to our ambition of making Canada a leader in this field.

Cloud Archiving Services - Sharepoint Cloud Storage
These technologies are important because they provide the framework for creating new revenue-generating products and services. Once a Trusted Cloud environment is established it provides a platform for a variety of next generation services.

The first we're focusing on is in response to these RFPs, starting with 'Cloud Archiving Services'. This is fast-tracking a Newfoundland based start-up called Esotera, by integrating their core technology into a managed Cloud service for 'Sharepoint Cloud Storage'.

These capabilities will meet the needs of the local Canadian government requirements, and the reason this approach is key because other governments have the same requirements.

As highlighted in this news article in December 2010 Whitehouse CIO Vivek Kundra announced that US Government agencies should identify and migrate three legacy systems to Cloud computing. In a prior news feature he also highlighted that one way in which they are pioneering this type of migration is through 'Cloud Archiving Services', for applications like Microsoft Exchange and Sharepoint.
